Language as the key to market access

Why translation matters
A label does not only communicate what is in a product, it does so in the language of the consumer. Without accurate translation, a product simply cannot enter the market. Legislation requires labels to be clear and understandable in the country where the product is sold. Translation is therefore not just a practical step, but the key to trust, safety, and marketability.
What lies beneath
Translation may seem straightforward, but in practice it requires much more than converting words from one language to another. Every term must fit within the legal framework of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 and other relevant legislation.
The biggest misconception? That translating a label is a simple language exercise. In reality, the quality of the translation determines whether consumers are properly informed and whether a product complies with local requirements.
Leadership as the foundation
Managing translations involves multiple teams. QA requires certainty, marketing requires consistency, and supply chain requires speed.
Leadership is needed to align these interests and position translation as a strategic process. Organisations that do this well not only prevent errors and delays, but also build reliability and brand consistency across markets.
Two levels of development
Compliance | Getting the basics right
Translating labels and texts to ensure the correct language is available for each market. Often done by overlabelling existing packaging with translated text.
Compliance+ | Integration and collaboration
This level is not yet fully developed, but represents the next step, where translation becomes a structural part of the artwork and labelling process rather than a corrective action.
What it delivers
A well-organised translation approach provides clear benefits:
- Access to new markets without legal barriers
- Reduced risk of errors or fines due to incomplete or incorrect translations
- Stronger brand consistency, with messages accurately and uniformly communicated across languages
- More efficient processes by embedding translation into the overall labelling and packaging workflow
