Water Management

3 min read

Why water management matters

Water is one of the most essential resources in the food industry and one of the most vulnerable. Scarcity, consumption, pollution, and rising costs require organisations to manage water more consciously, efficiently, and transparently. Water management is therefore not just a technical condition. It is a strategic priority. Whether it concerns usage, discharge, or reuse, insight and action are essential for continuity, compliance, and sustainability.

What lies beneath

Water management requires more than meter readings and reports. It involves:

  • Insight into all forms of water intake and usage
  • Structured monitoring and analysis
  • Targeted reduction measures and investments
  • A strategy aligned with business goals and societal expectations

Without a structured approach, water management remains intention. With the right system, it becomes controllable and optimisable.

Leadership means managing what once seemed obvious

Water is often taken for granted in operational processes. Organisations that want to move forward make it measurable, manageable, and strategically relevant. Leadership means understanding where water is used, identifying opportunities for improvement, and ensuring savings are embedded in both policy and behaviour. Organisations that take water seriously today build resilience for tomorrow.

Three levels of development

Compliance | Insight into intake and usage

Mapping water consumption across the organisation, from intake to usage per process step. Reporting is aligned with legislation and requirements from supply chain partners or certification bodies.

Compliance+ | Water management strategy and reduction

Developing a water management strategy with measurable targets, such as consumption per unit of product or discharge volumes per location. Reduction measures are implemented, including optimisation of cleaning processes, reuse of water streams, investment in water saving technologies, and exploration of alternative sources.

Strategic | Integration into business strategy

Embedding water management into business strategy, ESG reporting, and risk management systems. KPIs, targets, and actions are integrated into the management system and reviewed and reported annually. Water impact is linked to brand values, stakeholder expectations, and long term investment decisions.

What it delivers

A mature water management approach provides:

  • Lower operational costs and reduced consumption
  • Compliance with legislation, audits, and reporting requirements
  • Demonstrable ESG performance for customers and investors
  • Reduced environmental risks and dependencies
  • Greater efficiency and sustainability in processes

What you measure, you can manage. What you save strengthens your resilience.
