Governance

3 min read

Why governance matters

Responsible business goes beyond what you produce or sell. It is also about how you operate. Governance in sustainability is about behaviour, transparency, integrity, and accountability in decision making, across the supply chain and within your organisation. In a time of increasing societal expectations, regulation, and reporting requirements, organisations must do more than comply. They must demonstrate that their actions align with their values. Topics such as anti corruption, diversity in leadership, and business ethics are becoming essential in building trust with customers, partners, employees, and society. Trust begins with how you manage responsibility, power, and people.

What lies beneath

Strong governance requires more than formal structures. It demands insight into behaviour, risks of corruption or conflicts of interest, and the social dynamics within and beyond the organisation. It requires both policy and culture. How are dilemmas discussed? Which standards apply in daily work? What happens when behaviour does not align with organisational values? Transparency in governance, diversity in leadership, and ethical business practices are no longer optional. They are integral to sustainability reporting frameworks such as ESRS and increasingly influence how stakeholders evaluate organisations.

Leadership means leading by example

Organisations that take governance seriously understand that behaviour is directly linked to strategy. It is a strategic lever. Leadership means setting standards that go beyond minimum compliance, establishing a shared code of conduct, and taking responsibility for actions across the organisation and supply chain. Organisations that are transparent about behaviour, open to reflection, and committed to integrity create a culture of trust. This is the foundation for sustainable growth.

Three levels of development

Compliance | Understanding ethical risks

Identifying ethical risks such as corruption, bribery, or conflicts of interest. Organisations gather insights from incidents, audit findings, and internal signals. Data such as leadership diversity is monitored. The focus is on meeting legal requirements and preparing for reporting and evaluation.

Compliance+ | Embedding behaviour and culture

Developing and implementing policies on ethical conduct, anti corruption, and diversity. Codes of conduct are communicated, trained, and integrated into recruitment, supplier agreements, and performance management. Organisations focus on awareness, accountability, and leadership behaviour across the supply chain.

Strategic | Governance as part of ESG strategy

Embedding governance into ESG strategy and daily operations. Ethics, diversity, and integrity are integrated into decision making, processes, and reporting. KPIs, targets, and improvement actions are monitored, evaluated, and transparently reported. Governance becomes a strategic driver of trust, reputation, and long term impact.

What it delivers

A strong governance approach strengthens organisations across all levels:

  • More reliable and transparent decision making
  • Increased trust from external stakeholders
  • Reduced risk of integrity breaches
  • Greater organisational resilience
  • Alignment between societal values and business objectives

Governance is not just about compliance. It is about building credibility and long term trust.
