What lies beneath
The EU Deforestation Regulation requires more than a supplier declaration. You need to:
- Know exactly where your products originate, including geolocation and traceability
- Demonstrate that they are not linked to deforested land
- Store and maintain accessible documentation
This requires supply chain collaboration, digital support, and internal awareness. Transparency is no longer optional. It is a condition for market access.
Leadership means taking responsibility across the chain
The regulation changes responsibilities across the supply chain. Not only producers, but also importers and traders are held accountable. Organisations that act proactively build trust with customers, auditors, and consumers. Leadership means anticipating change, establishing systems, engaging partners, and integrating sustainability into procurement strategies.
Three levels of development
Compliance | Documenting and declaring
Collecting geolocation data, verifying supplier information, and preparing compliance documentation. The focus is on meeting the minimum requirements of the regulation through transparency and structured documentation.
Compliance+ | Assessing and improving
Conducting gap analyses and risk assessments alongside compliance activities. Organisations develop improvement plans, evaluate procurement policies, and create structure in supply chain management and data handling.
Strategic | Embedding into policy and processes
Integrating deforestation free sourcing into policies, contracts, supplier evaluation, and internal processes. Organisations monitor continuously, actively manage supply chain collaboration, and align deforestation risks with broader ESG objectives.
What it delivers
A strong approach to deforestation risks provides more than compliance:
- Access to the European market under the regulation
- Reduced reputational and legal risks
- Stronger collaboration with suppliers and supply chain partners
- A credible and sustainable market position
- Increased trust from customers and consumers
From risk to opportunity, organisations that are transparent about origin build trust.
